Memao Sprite Creator Remade!
Developer Update
We decided to completely recreate the tool from the ground up using Godot 4.4 (from Godot 3.6). This gave us even more tools to make the creator the best it could be. We evaluated the UI and made a lot of changes. Here are two of the biggest:
Sprite Part Selection
- All the sprite options are now shown with previews and labels, so no more cycling through a list one by one.
- The ability to lock a Sprite part, so when you go to randomize, that part is not changed. This is great if you've already found the perfect hairstyle or accessory.
Color Palette Editor
- All the color palette options are laid out to choose from, so again no more cycle through a list with arrow buttons
- The colors of each palette are shown in detail with hex code values
- The ability to create custom color palettes and save them for future use!
- An HSV slider to quickly change the hue of an entire palette
- Build your own palette color by color with a fully featured color picker tool
- All palettes are now universal, so you can use them across sprites and characters

On the Horizon
We spent a lot of time discussing whether to delay release until Custom Asset support was ready. It’s a feature we know the community values and one we believe will truly set this tool apart.
Ultimately, we decided to launch with just the built-in Memao Sprites for a few key reasons:
- We want early feedback on the core creator experience.
- There are still UI and feature improvements we haven’t considered yet.
- Building a solid foundation now will help avoid rework once we add Custom Assets.
We’re also exploring whether Custom Assets support should be a standalone tool or an add-on. Some users want to import their own art, while others prefer a plug-and-play creator. Supporting both workflows well is important to us.
That said, we’re fully committed to bringing Custom Asset functionality to life—in some form—by the end of the year.
Animation Update

I'm happy to announce that all of the current customization options are finished for the walk animation! I really enjoy making everything bounce/sway. I spent a bit of time creating different assets for the idle animations to amp up the character creator, so I am feeling relieved that they are finally being completed for all animations.
The run animation is next—and it will be included in the May 20th release alongside the other new features.
Before I dive deeper, I’d love your input:
Should we focus on adding more customization options for Walk, Idle, and Run first, or start building out new animation types? Such as Jump, Forage, etc?
